Portrait of Ernie by Iain Welch
Ernie, as painted by Iain

“Can I tempt you with a portrait of your hound for sixty pound?” That sentence instantly caught my attention and made me fall in love with artist Iain Welch’s watercolours a little bit more than I already did.

If you’re looking to commission a pet portrait, consider Iain. Not only is his work beautiful, but it is very much affordable – and all he needs to get started on a commission is several full-length photos of your dog. For me, that certainly wasn’t a problem as I have literally hundreds of Ernie!

Family pawtrait by Iain Welch
Our family “pawtrait”

Iain specialises in drawing dogs but was more than happy to create a bespoke “family pawtrait” for us, which now has pride of place in our lounge. The quoted price – which increased to £65 in September 2019 – was for a picture that, when mounted, would fit into a 10x12in frame. Iain also offers a smaller 8x10in option for £45 and postage is always free for UK orders, while it’s £5 for the rest of the world.

Iain, who has been painting since he was small, lives in Herefordshire with his two dogs, Ro (a collie-lab cross) and Bella (a mix of all sorts of wonderfulness!) When he’s not busy drawing dogs, Iain teaches art classes and as well as custom pet portraits, he also has a range of prints and cards for sale in his online shop.
