What’s Ibis Budget Sheffield Centre St Mary’s Gate like?
This no-frills hotel is part of the Ibis chain and is located on the outskirts of Sheffield city centre. It is part of the Velocity Tower complex and opened during lockdown so everything still seems brand new. When you think of budget hotels, you often don’t expect much – but you’ll be pleasantly surprised here.
How dog-friendly is Ibis Budget Sheffield Centre St Mary’s Gate?
Great. No beds, bowls or food are provided so you’ll need to bring your own but dogs are welcome throughout the hotel – including the Chill #10 cafe. If you ask very nicely, the cafe staff might give your pooch a treat or two as well! Up to two dogs are allowed to stay per room for an additional charge of £10 per pet per night.

Tell me more about Ibis Budget Sheffield Centre St Mary’s Gate
The hotel has 126 modern rooms spread over six floors, all of which feature Ibis’ new Nest bedroom design. As the name suggests, they’re pretty small – but for budget travellers, they are perfectly formed. While there aren’t any tea and coffee making facilities or fancy robes, there is a comfy bed and a powerful shower. The clean, bright rooms also have flatscreen TVs, air conditioning, super-fast WiFi and USB charging points.
Although it was compact, we slept brilliantly in our room, thanks to a blackout blind with bristles around the edge that blocked out any rogue chinks of light. I also loved the humorous door hangers and clever storage features, like the cubby holes above the bed where you could put your phone or glasses. At the Ibis, the standard check-out time is midday – which is something many hotels often charge extra for. There is no car parking onsite but you can reserve a space nearby for an additional fee.

What’s the food like at Ibis Budget Sheffield Centre St Mary’s Gate?
Great, considering this is a budget hotel. The Chill #10 cafe on the ground floor serves a whole host of reasonably priced food 24/7. In the mornings, you can grab a coffee and a pastry for just a few pounds and tasty pizzas, jacket potatoes and paninis are served day and night. Everything is available to enjoy in the colourful cafe itself, or you can take the food and drink back to your room. There is also a great range of alcoholic drinks, from beer and wine to spirits.
Are there resident dogs at Ibis Budget Sheffield Centre St Mary’s Gate?
No, but you may well bump into other dogs who are staying over. We met one other pooch snoozing on the cafe sofa while his owner worked on his laptop!

Where are the best dog walks near Ibis Budget Sheffield Centre St Mary’s Gate?
Sheffield is known as the ‘Outdoor City’ – and with the Peak District practically on the doorstep, it’s easy to see why. There are a whole host of fantastic walks to be had there, as detailed in my Ruff Guide to the Peak District. For something a bit closer to the hotel though, consider South Street Park. This fantastic park is close to the station and has an incredible outdoor ampitheatre as well as its own arboretum.
You can also see the best of Steel City on a 15-mile circular walk that goes via its parks and woodland trails. If you’re feeling energetic, you can do it all in one go but the walk can be split into more manageable chunks. The Dog-Friendly Sheffield website has lots of information about the walk, and others.
