What’s Judins Cottage like?

This stylish two-bedroom cottage is located on a working farm in rural East Sussex. The friendly hosts, Sarah and Mark, live opposite and it’s possible to walk to Bateman’s – the family home of writer Rudyard Kipling – across their fields. The market town of Heathfield is approximately a 10-minute drive away.

How dog-friendly is Judins Cottage?

Excellent. You’ll find a special dog basket in the lounge packed with treats, toys, poo bags, bowls, towels and blankets. There are also ID tags you can attach to your dogs’ collars in case they get lost, plus information about local secure fields, beaches and groomers. Ernie and Stan loved spending time in Judins’ large, secure garden, which has beautiful views over the farm and surrounding fields. There is no additional charge for dogs to stay either, which is great.

Tell me more about Judins Cottage

From the moment you enter this gorgeous cottage, you’ll be blown away. The first thing you’ll notice, once you take your shoes off, is the fact there is underfloor heating throughout, which feels lovely and luxurious. Laminate flooring covers the whole ground floor too, so it’s easy to clean up after muddy paws if it happens to be wet when you visit.

You enter into the spacious kitchen area, which is very well-equipped (keep reading to find out more) and has a large dining table that invites guests to sit down and be social. A downstairs toilet, complete with washing machine and tumble dryer, can also be found by the front door, along with thoughtful touches like a clothing airer and ironing board.

The kitchen leads in to the enormous lounge, which has three comfy sofas, a smart TV and wood burner (logs are provided). Board games, cards and books by local author Rudyard Kipling are also provided to keep you entertained. There is also a crazy amount of plug sockets and fast WiFi, should you need to stay connected during your visit.

Master bedroom at Judins Cottage, Burwash

Upstairs, you’ll find two light and airy bedrooms that look like they’ve come straight out of the pages of an interiors magazine. The master bedroom has a kingsize four-poster, while the other room boasts a comfy double. Both rooms have lots of storage and dressing tables, and you’ll find chocolates and fresh towels laid out on the beds, which are made up with luxurious linens.

On the first floor, there is also a family bathroom with lush complimentary toiletries and things like ear plugs, eye masks and sanitary towels tucked away in a drawer. And outside, you’ll find a large, secure garden with decking and a pergola, wrapped in fairy lights. If the weather is good, make the most of the gas BBQ and enjoy amazing views of the surrounding farmland.

Judins, which is accessed via electric gates, has parking for two cars right outside – and guests also have access to an electric car charger, should they require it. While the property is situated right next to an A-road, noise really isn’t a problem – and it certainly doesn’t bother the farm’s sheep, who you can ask to meet. The animals really are the cherry on the cake!

What’s the food like at Judins Cottage?

This is a self-catering cottage so you’ll need to provide your own, but an excellent welcome pack will help get you started. Ours, which was presented in a cute wicker basket, had everything from French bread to crisps, popcorn, cookies, cheese and red wine. There were also fresh eggs from the farm chickens and some proper butter, as well as a whole tea and coffee station complete with syrups.

It’s a joy to cook in the amazingly well-equipped kitchen, as pretty much every utensil and gadget you can possibly think of – from a dishwasher to egg cups and a coffee grinder – is provided. It all feels new too, and is sparklingly clean and complimented by fresh flowers. There are even cookbooks to inspire you and a Bose speaker to soundtrack your culinary creations.

There are plenty of dog-friendly places to eat out nearby though, if you’d rather let someone else do the cooking. The Wheel Inn, just up the road from Judins, serves homemade pub grub while The Old Orchard Nursery, in nearby Etchingham, is the place to go for breakfast. Beer lovers will also enjoy visiting Lakedown Brewing Co, on The Who frontman Roger Daltrey’s family farm. The taproom overlooks the fishing lake and often has food trucks visit at weekends.

Are there resident dogs at Judins Cottage?

Yes, Munchie the labradoodle and Oreo the bordoodle. They live in the house opposite the cottage so you may well meet them during your stay.

Stan walks the Cuckoo Trail in Heathfield, East Sussex

Where are the best dog walks near Judins Cottage?

As mentioned earlier, you can walk to Bateman’s – the former home of Jungle Book author Rudyard Kipling – across Sarah and Mark’s fields. The 17th Century property, which is now maintained by the National Trust, property is less than a mile away from the cottage but depending on the time of year you visit, you may well need wellies! Dogs are not allowed inside Bateman’s but they can explore the grounds, which are beautiful. Adult tickets cost £15.

The Cuckoo Trail, which starts in nearby Heathfield, is well worth checking out, too. This 14-mile surfaced path, pictured above, has been created along the route of an old railway line and is mostly traffic-free, making it popular with walkers, joggers and cyclists. The trail runs all the way to Shinewater Park, passing through Horam, Hailsham and Polegate. If you start your walk in Heathfield, there’s a free Cuckoo Trail car park opposite the town’s Waitrose.
