What’s Autumn Cottage like?
This cosy two-bedroom cottage is located in a quiet village near the North Yorkshire coast. Owners Dan and Kenny and have thought of everything you could possibly need for a relaxing break and as a result, it feels like a real home from home. The seaside resort of Filey is just a few minutes away by car.
How dog-friendly is Autumn Cottage?
Great. Dogs are very welcome here and they’ll find a collection of bowls, treats, poo bags and balls waiting for them when they arrive. There are even some spare leads you can borrow – plus a stairgate to keep pooches on the ground floor. The patio garden is entirely secure once the main gate is closed and there are several suggestions for local walks in the cottage welcome pack. There is no additional charge for dogs to stay.
Tell me more about Autumn Cottage
From the moment you walk into the cottage, you’ll feel instantly at home. While there is a front door, you actually access the property from the side and go straight into the spacious L-shaped kitchen/diner. There’s a light and airy feel throughout, with magnolia walls, stone flooring and rustic wooden furniture. And that natural vibe continues in the cosy lounge, which comes complete with a wood flooring, a lovely stove and baskets of logs and blankets.
Upstairs, you’ll find the two bedrooms – a large double at the back of the house and a single at the front. Both rooms are carpeted and have lots of storage. There’s also a second TV in the master bedroom, which has a gorgeous bed and linen that feels really luxurious. The shower room is a real treat too, with a large cubicle, rainforest showerhead and cool driftwood mirror. I loved all the little nods to the local area as well, with prints and wall art featuring Filey and Flamborough.
The cottage has lots of maps and information about nearby attractions, as well as a selection of books and games to keep you busy on rainy days. The weather was a bit mixed when we visited, but we did manage to enjoy a glass of wine on the patio area, which gets plenty of sun until late in the day. The outdoor space also provides parking for one car and there is plenty of on-street parking, should you need more. The Coaster bus, which runs between Scarborough and Bridlington, stops right outside, too.
What’s the food like at Autumn Cottage?
Autumn Cottage is a self-catering property so you’ll need to bring your own, but a few bits and pieces are provided to help you settle in. When we arrived, there was lots of tea and coffee as well as some Borders biscuits and little pots of Tiptree jam. There were also several condiments and kitchen essentials in the cupboards that guests could use.
The well-stocked country-style kitchen has everything you need to cook up a feast – including a range cooker on which to do it. There are also several handy gadgets such as an Alexa, air fryer, dishwasher and Nespresso coffee machine, complete with pods. The kitchen has a lovely tiled floor that continues into the dining area, where you’ll find a rustic-style table for four.
If you don’t fancy cooking, The Ship Inn, just a few doors down, serves giant portions of old-school comfort food, like filled Yorkshire puddings. And in Hunmanby, just a short drive away, The Piebald Inn is renowned for its “wold famous” pies. There are 52 on the menu – one for every week of the year. Both pubs are dog-friendly, and there are lots of other great options in Filey.

No, but owners Dan and Kenny do have dogs – which is why the cottage is so pet-friendly.
Where are the best dog walks near Autumn Cottage?
With the North Yorkshire coast so close, you’re spoilt for choice! Hunmanby Gap, around a 10-minute drive from the cottage, is a great place for dogs to let off some steam. The boys had great time running around on the sand, pictured above, and aside from a couple of other dog walkers, we had the beach to ourselves. The walk down from the car park at the top of the cliff (£1 per hour, cash only) is quite steep but you can take a breather at the amazing Beach Cafe halfway down. Be sure to check the tide times before you visit and try to coincide your trip with low tide.
From Hunmanby Gap, you can walk all the way to Filey (tides depending) in about an hour. If you stay on the beach, it’s around 2.5 miles – but there’s a longer, circular walk that takes in both coast and country that’s recommended by Visit North Yorkshire. This route is approximately 10 miles long and will take you three hours. Dan and Kenny also detail a lovely local loop in the welcome pack that will take you through Muston’s meadows. It starts from the front door of the cottage and depending on the route you follow, will take between 20 and 40 minutes.
